Bamboo is a variety of grass, which varies in height from twelve inch plants to huge timber bamboo species that can grow to thirty or forty metres and more. Growing in a diverse range of different climates in jungles and high on mountainsides but also now widely cultivated in more temperate climates for its undeniable natural beauty. Bamboo species are classified by the types of roots they have. Some are called runners which tend to spread quickly and others are classified as clumpers, which slowly expand from the original location. There are also species that are a mixture of these types. Generally, the temperate bamboos tend to be runners and the tropical bamboos tend to be clumpers.

Bamboo is both useful and decorative. In many parts of the world it is both food, the primary construction material and is used for making great variety of useful objects from kitchen tools and utensils, to dinnerware, plates chopsticks and paper.
